EXCERPT:

“Mum.” I clutched her arm carefully. “Do you not remember yesterday? The crash?”
She looked at me strangely and then lifted her car keys off the hook. My mouth gaped open. How could the car keys be there? Mum only had one set, and they were in the car when it crashed.
“What crash?” My mum asked, a crease forming between her brows.
“Erm, nothing. I’ve been dreaming nonsense again.”
“You always did have a vivid imagination.”
I walked through to the living room and looked out of the front window. My mother’s Vauxhall was parked outside absolutely fine.
It had all been a goddamn dream. A vivid freaking nightmare.
I collapsed onto the sofa and couldn’t help the tears that came down my face.
My mum’s voice came from the hallway. “I’m off, love. See you later. Tell your brother he’s not spending the whole of the holiday like this.” The door banged shut.
Once again time slowed down to thousandths of a second as my gaze turned to the cube calendar my mother kept on the shelf.
21 Aug 2018.
Four days ago.
My heart thudded in my chest. I was going insane. I needed a psychiatrist. The crash. Thea. It couldn’t have all been a dream. No one dreams that vividly.
My mother’s car set off down the drive and I rose to my feet watching through the window as her car—very real in front of my gaze—disappeared from view. I needed to check on Billy. Make sure he was in his room. Then I was taking the day off sick because something was very wrong with my mind.
And then she turned the corner. Turned and walked right up the road on the opposite side and as she reached directly opposite she stared right at our house, right through the window, and her brown eyes met mine. Thea.
But something else was off. Because this girl’s gaze was warm.
